Everyone has difficulty sleeping from time to time, maybe due to certain issues like noisy environment or stress. This does not mean you have a sleeping disorder, it just means you need to get some sleep. When your inability to sleep persists, it could then be regarded as insomnia. Insomnia simply put is inability of a person to sleep properly or get adequate sleep. It is a sleeping disorder and it involves one not getting adequate sleep, waking up frequently at night or waking up too early in the morning. Most people with this disorder feel tired after waking up. Insomnia can be primary or secondary. Primary insomnia is not associated with any other health challenge while secondary insomnia is mostly as a result of other health condition.
Many people with insomnia may be experiencing this disorder due to the effects of certain medications, environmental factors, emotional instability or life stress due to work or other factors. Whatever the reason, insomnia has deteriorating effects on the body and should be looked into immediately.
What Is Insomnia?
Insomnia is a disorder that makes it extremely difficult for one to fall asleep or find it hard to stay asleep for a long period of time. People with insomnia always wake up tired and not refreshed because of inadequate sleep. A normal adult needs about 6-7 hours of sleep per day.
Insomnia is more predominant in adults between the ages of 30-50 years. Also women seem to suffer this disorder more than men. Elderly people also have a higher risk of suffering from insomnia
Types of Insomnia
There are various types of insomnia:
Transient Insomnia: This insomnia does not last long. It lasts for about a week or less. It could be caused as a result of change in environment, depression or other health challenge.
Acute Insomnia: Acute insomnia also called short term insomnia is a sleeping disorder that last for about a month or less. The person finds it difficult to sleep despite being provided with adequate sleeping environment and opportunity.
Chronic Insomnia: This is a type of insomnia that last for more than a month. It could be secondary or primary. However, researchers have proven that most chronic insomnia is secondary, and the result of another health disorder.
Causes of Insomnia
There are a number of things that can cause insomnia. Some of them are listed below.
- Chronic pain: Chronic pain in any part of the body can prevent you from having adequate rest.
- Depression is another thing that can lead to insomnia.
- There are certain medications that can prevent someone from sleeping adequately especially those that are used for high blood pressure and common cold.
- Environmental factors: There are certain environmental factors that can also cause insomnia. Noisy or extreme hot environment can disrupt our sleep and lead to insomnia. Some cannot sleep with bright lights and hence will find it difficult sleeping in rooms with bright lights outside the window.
- Stress from work, home or anywhere can also result in insomnia.
Symptoms of insomnia
Some of the symptoms associated with insomnia include:
- Tiredness especially when you wake up in the morning, memory issues or lack of concentration.
- Feeling sleepy during the day.
There are certain sleeping pills that can help one get enough sleep but a couple disadvantages of using s these pills is that your body becomes dependant on them and they can leave you feeling groggy in the morning.
There are many nutritional supplements that can help you get the amount of sleep your require with out these nasty side effects.
Valerian: This is a dietary supplement that can be taken to induce sleep and it has been in use for ages.
Another dietary supplement that can be taken to aid sleep is the Melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone that helps regulate sleep cycles. Chamomile tea is another medication that aids sleeping. It is a traditional medicine and has been proven scientifically in animals to aid sleeping.
Another supplement that can be very helpful is L-Theanine. L-Theanine is an amino acid that helps to calm the mind and is great for people that can’t fall asleep because of thoughts racing through their minds.
Others supplements that can be very beneficial include Kava, magnesium, 5-HTP and many more.
Holistic Approach To Insomnia
Sleep is essential for everyone. It helps your body to rejuvenate and heal. Scientists have proven that those that do not get enough sleep tend to age faster and have a greater risk of developing other health issues so it is important to address any sleep issues quickly.
To improve sleep quality you have to:
Limit the amount of stimulants that you consume, like caffeine, alcohol, aspirin and anything else that can disrupt sleep.
Also ensure the environment is conducive for you. If you find it difficult sleeping in a noisy environment look for a quiet environment or wear earplugs so you are not disturbed.
Ensure that the room you sleep in is dark. Too much light will prevent the body from producing natural melatonin and triggering the sleep cycle.
You should also limit nap times even though you may feel you need to get some rest. Napping can be counterproductive and lead to getting even less sleep at night.
Doing a little yoga or meditation in the evening can also help to relax you mind and body so that when you go to sleep you can drift into dreamland easily.
Some people lie in bed for hours and still find it difficult to sleep. This can become frustrating and make the problem worse. Try getting up and reading for a while or listen to some soft relaxing music. For some people watching television can help put them to sleep but for others this does the opposite, so try some different things and see what works for you.
