3 Ways to Get Those Fruits and Veggies

It's not always easy to get all the fruits and vegetables that you need.. sometimes we all get a little stuck on good ways of making sure our diet, and our children's diet, consists of food rich in vitamins and minerals. Well Mom has a couple of ideas that you may find helpful!

1. Easy Access

Everyone loves to snack, but what we choose to snack on can often be the problem. Fruits and vegetables are a great snack, and super nutritious to boot! Snacking is often about finding whatever is easy to grab from the fridge. So to solve that guilty snacking problem, make fruits and vegetables readily available. Apples and bananas are easy to put on the counter, where you can see them, and great for an on-the-go snack. Every couple of days try spending 30 minutes chopping up some veggies and then store them in your fridge! Healthy, and easily accessible.

2. Half the Plate Rule

An easy rule to follow when looking to make sure you get all the veggies you need is to follow the simple half the plate rule. When making your meals, make sure that half of your plate is solely veggies. This will also add the lovely colour to the plate that makes our food look so yummy!

3. Grow Your Own

It's very important for us to connect with our food. Knowing where our food comes from and how it gets to us is essential to know. It is all a part of connecting us with our food and our environment, as food and environment are interconnected- how food is grown and shipped around the world has a direct effect on our environment. Growing your own food not only is better for the environment, but it also can be fun! Get your friends or children out helping- make it something you look forward to doing. And the result- delicious! In the winter there is also the option to grow things indoor on your windowsill such as lettuce, kale, radishes, and herbs like dill and basil!

Our bodies need these essential vitamins and minerals from real food. Vegetables and fruits are great ways to get what we need. Mom wants you to be healthy, and sometimes all it takes are little changes here and there to make a difference. Everyone has to start somewhere- so why not let that somewhere be your plate!
